Saxophone Section

Tenor sax

I have been playing the tenor saxophone for five years. I am currently in the High School Marching and Concert Band and the High School Jazz Band. I have also been a member of The Big Band on the Gila and a local ska band. Jazz has become my primary interest in the past two years. Primarily I am interested in Bebop, Latin and Dixeyland. In the interest of playing Dixeyland I have taken up the clarinet, having played it for about 3/4 of a year now.

A Brief History of Saxophones

Saxophones were invented in 1846 by Adolph Sax. He combined a clarinet mouthpiece with oboe keywork and fastened them to a conical brass tube with a flared bell. The saxophone family includes (from highest in pitch to lowest in pitch) the sopranino, soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, and the baritone, bass, and contrabass saxophones. The saxophone was originaly intended for military bands but today it is used in rock, jazz, and many other types of music.
